So a million years ago I lived in NYC and owned a little moving company We moved people and their stuff from place to place to pay our bills, and we played in a rock and roll band to have some fun My business got buzy, and we would end up with more jobs then we could do So we would pass off jobs to other movers
That’s when I met Kirk He had a shitty van and was doing the same thing we were I gave him jobs from time to time, we’d talk on the phone It was years before I met him He was different looking then I imagined he’d be He was tall, red headed and looked Irish I was sitting in stopped traffic once on the BQE and I looked over and there he was right next to me in his blue Chevy van, playing his harmonica Happy as a clam
He called me one day, told me he was moving to California Asked me if I’d buy his van for $300 I agreed I didn’t realize he was on the corner He double parked the van in front of my place and came up stairs I gave him the money, and wished him luck
He has apologized to me for that van almost every time I have seen him in the last dozen or so years To say it was a piece of shit is an understatement The doors closed by being tied with shoe laces The exhaust piped right into the cabin The tires were bald, the lights didn’t work The thing was a menace The second day I owned it I couldn’t get it to start then it got towed away for having expired tags The year was 1989
Kirk moved to SF and co-founded the mighty Rube Waddell with Larry and Freddy He got into fishing He is a talented ukulele player Kinda He married the bartender from the Odeon, Camilla and had a little boy named Django Kirk has become kinda a fishing advocate For sustainable fishing Not the kind that poisons the ocean and so on There is a right way to fish And it’s complicated and not as profitable But the fish are way better when caught sustainably
He’s quite celebrated, as a fisherman Activist Teacher He leads tours, talks to people about fish Explains things De-mystifies other things He sings pirate songs, too Camilla plays the accordion I’m sure the kid we be tap dancing soon
He just made a big leap He started a CSF: Community Supported Fishery It’s a box of fish you buy, sight unseen that you pick up once a week or once every other week It’s $22 His plan is to get 300 people to sign up, to make it work Read all about it here:

This is a great idea You get better fish then you have access too, and it’s cheaper then any store This is the most DIY attempt at a business you’ve ever seen The Chez Poulet will be a drop off point, you will come there to get your package of fish You can sign up for however long you want This is a cool thing to support, and he is a cool guy Don’t buy a van from him, though…
This mailing list is announce-only.
This email list is that of Showman Chicken John Rinaldi of San Francisco. You can keep up with his shenanigans and opinions by being on this list. If you would like to be included in a list to announce shows, that would be on the SFIOP.org site. This is for personal writing and such. He posts a few times a week at most. You sound much more important when you speak about yourself in the 3rd person. At least I do when I talk about me as 'him'.
Your email will be used for this list and this list only. I will not subscribe you to another list or sell your email address to get money for blow. I wouldn't do it I swear.
