OK, so if you don’t know what’s happening on 16th street here is a quick update

Adobe Books rent was tripled They agreed to pay, but got evicted anyway No law was broken in doing this, although Adobe had been there for 25 years Adobe Books re-opened on 24th street

5th and Pacific company secures lease for that space for $12,000 a month They fill out forms with the city to put in one of their formula retail stores The one they decide to go with is Jack Spade, which has ten other locations in the US Kate Spade, another brand they own has 100 locations They also own Juicy Couture, Lucky Jeans and some other dreck

They are arguing that no public hearing of the planning commission is needed (as was needed for American Apparel, if you remember) because Jack Spade only has 10 locations and by definition SF views 11 or more locations as “formula retail” And there are only ten locations of Jack Spade

This company that is worth billions of dollars is making a fool out of our planning department, our department of building inspections and now they are making fools of the appeals board They are a billion dollar company and with the help of a sleezy mission real estate permit expeditor they are going to put a formula retail store on 16th street without any public input DESPITE what the voters of SF (65% of them) want

What can be done?

We have an appeals process The board of appeals is a 5 person board In order to overturn anything, you have to get a 4-1 vote Good luck getting 4 people to agree on anything We appealed their building permits, we appealed their Letter of Determination by the zoning administrator Now we are re-appealing the building permits The date for this hearing is Wedensday Oct 9th

IT WILL BE OUR LAST CHANCE TO SHOW THE BOARD OF APPEALS THAT THIS COMPANY WORTH BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IS MAKING A FOOL OF US
