Chicken: Chicken John reads at Literary Death Match on Friday...

I'm reading at Literary Death Match on Friday. It's an early show. Starts at 7pm, at the Elbo Room... The Literary Death Match is like a reading series, but it's competitive. LDM features a mix of four writers who perform in a bar before an adoring/drunk audience and a panel of three all-star judges who take turns spouting affectionate commentary about (or maybe not about) each story. Two writers advance to the finals where we trade in the showâs literary sensibility for a fight to the death. Why, may you ask, am I reading at a Literary thingity thing thing? What, may you ask, am I going to read? Well. I'm gonna read a chapter from my book. I've been holed up. And now done. It ships to the printer next week. I'm going to tell you more about it after it ships. It's kinda exciting, I have to admit. I have sat down a few times to collect my thoughts. But I just didn't have the patience or the stick-to-itivness to keep going when it stopped flowing. You have to force a book into existence. It's not like building a boat out of bullshit with a few guys and some beer over a weekend. You have to wake up early and spend all your hours writing things that you know you are going to end up deleting. It's an odd and tilted task. But you can hear a chapter this Friday, if you are so inclined. And I promise there will be more to come soon. I have to spend the rest of this week doing lay out and design stuff. But I dont' want to talk about it all until it ships away to the printer and I can say for sure when it's going to be something actual... I am sitting here in a chair in Nashville in complete shock and amazement. Today is the one year anniversary of Diane's arrival in India. Wednesday was the one year anniversary of the accident. I just returned from Hollis' rehabilitation center where upon leaving I shed tears of joy. HOLLIS IS NOT AT ALL IN A COMA ANYMORE!!! Yes! You read that correctly! Scream, shout, jump up and down! Have a shot! Dance! Kiss somebody! It's the real deal, seen it with mine own two eyes! She is awake and talking and present and brilliant and amazing! I just had a four hour long conversation with her. It was one of the most beautiful moments of my life. I started off by saying how good it was to see her... to which she replied how glad she was that I came. Blown to pieces, my mind is blown. I hugged Diane and said "It's like a miracle." and as I said it, I realized that it wasn't like one... it is one. I can't explain the feeling and honestly I'm still processing it but to be able to talk to our beloved Hollis again is a gift. She is free from what she describes as a scary, sad dream. She said there was a big red monster and flames chasing her. She is out of there now and I can't help but think it's got to have a lot to do with how many people were rooting for her. Don't get me wrong, Hollis is one of the strongest most powerful women I have ever met and did it fully bullheadedly on her own, but the magic that we muster as a group, getting her the best treatment she could get and all her visitors in SF and healers who wor ked on her... well it all just hit paydirt. We started out just sort of mutually stammering for the words, me having not seen her in over 5 months and seeing her in her new consciousness; and her whole life having been completely turned upside down since we last spoke. It was a little overwhelming. Then we got around to covering it all... the accident, India, all of our friends, pre-india, the derailleurs, travels, her rehab, the benefit shows and so much more. Now she's not perfect. She's been in bed for a friggin year and she suffered severe head trauma and is just getting back into the swing of things. She has a lot of amnesia about lots of things, which she describes as fuzzy. She is also crystal clear about other things and generally really positive, speaking mostly about about beauty and fun. Also describing most things she's unpleased with (like rehab) as boring as opposed to harsher adjectives. Her speech is a little hurried and mumbly so I have to ask her to repeat herself a lot. She has a long way to go still and is just beginning a long journey on her path to recovery. She is, however, just as cute and sassy as ever. We were crackin each other up and it is so good to hear her laugh and see her smile. Contrarily it got really intense at times like when I told her that I saw the accident and when she then thanked me for saving her life. We were both welling up a little bit but it's all such a happy occasion it couldn't las t and instead she asked me for a hug. I bent down and she wrapped her arm around me and squeezed me. Diane is beaming, she was there when I got there along with Hollis' sister Heather and her girls (who she's had trouble remembering... but hopefully it will all slowly start coming back). People change a lot when they go through these kinds of injuries and you never know what changes will last when all is healed. She can move her left arm and leg just fine (it was the leg she was kicking with through her coma!) but it's gonna take a lot of work to unlock her right arm and regain movement in her right leg. The day after tomorrow Diane is having an important meeting about getting her into the best intensive rehab program in the area in Atlanta. So what now? Well all I can say is, if you love Hollis like I do, come runnin. Plan a trip out here to Nashville, stay with my friend Brodie or ask me for all the other options that are around of which there are many and come see her! Send her photos, videos, books, songs, movies, art whatever you think she'd like. If you have any money, of course rehabilitation is going to be so intensely expensive and take a long time and Hollis and Diane have a long way to go. You'll be traveling in the Applause Bus, piloted by none other than yours truly. 2 screens, plenty of cushion and nothing but open road to created a ecology of possibility that  could go anywhere. But we'll likely go to Pacifica Bowl, where Krob will kick your ass knockin' 'em down. Watching Hal bowl is amuzing. We'll eat nachos and play a game of fuzeball then it's back on the bus and everyone back to Ritual before the last BART.    The movie tonight is Nude on the Moon, 1960. Emily Kunkle is going to start teaching a donation yoga class at the warehouse tomorrow (Thursday) night from 7PM to 8PM. Again, Emily KUNKLE. That has to be the best name ever. Oh yea? Some movies, however, brings out the preservation society card-holder in me.  Doris Wishman had a vision of space travel that has never been paralleled before or since. This Month's feature presentation is "NUDE ON THE MOON".... Working with a large sum of inherited money, two scientists build a rocket to take them to the Moon. Once there, they discover that the Moon's surface is covered with lush, tropical vegetation and giant golden nuggets. The astronauts are soon captured, however, by a colony of telepathic lunar nudists (who are actually topless rather than completely nude). Much of the film deals with the men's efforts to collect data documenting their discovery and well as with the burgeoning romance between the younger of the two astronauts and the queen of the Moon people. After they return to Earth, the scientists discover that their evidence has been destroyed during re-entry. DRIVE-OUT THEATrE is a monthly movie series featured on two screens (in front and in back) on a brand-new projection system (the front screen is way sharper and clearer now). The sound system has been improved as well. The APPLAUSE Bus is a great rolling lounge.. a personalized green tortoise bus from 1968, cushy and vintage, that's become an institution in itself. If you didn't already know, Dr. Hal is a tremendous artitst. You should go to this closing party of his work at the Mercury Cafe and buy all of it. OK, OK.... you can just buy some of it. I'll see ya there..... chicken Friday, February 19th-- CLOSING PARTY! "The Productions of Time" --Art of Harry S. Robins --now at the Mercury CafÃ©, 201 Octavia St. at Page, will close on Friday, February 19th after a closing party featuring live performances by Dr. Hal and KrOB. These include a "Cartoon Concert" (a presentation pioneered by cartoonist Mark BodÃ©) --which will be a visual tour through more than a quarter century of comic book work, and visual synthesist KrOB's "Eyenoise." It's possibe-- quite probable in fact, that some of you have seen most of this stuff already. Even so, come to enjoy the live show, for which there is no charge. BOOKS Available for sale will be some copies of the books Dinosaur Alphabet and The Meaning of Lost and Mismatched Socks, both now becoming rare items, as well as a limited number of editions of the collaborative graphic novella Alien Apocalypse 2006, a work created with Underground comics legend Spain Rodriguez. 7-10 PM The Mercury CafÃ©, 201 Octavia Street (at Page). Even if you are not a voting advocate, getting people to understand that they do have a voice in this impoverished section of SF is important. The long time residents of Bayview/Hunters Point will all be pushed out if someone doesn't protect them and if they are not organized. The scumbags are circling and the most important district in SF can not endour another 8 years of someone like that idiot Sophie Maxwell. So meet us and do voter drive for like an hour or two.
