Who needs more adventure? I was talking to someone the other day and she said she needed more adventure.   Have you ever thought your life needs more romance? Do you need… an adventure? Do you need to do something you’ve never done before, throw it all to the wind and break away and lay in the lap of Chaos and just fucking see what happens? Do you need to simply make a mistake?   You do? Good. Stay with me now…   So we all need more adventure, more possibilities. More umph less filler. Romance? All these mini-malls getting to you? You getting kinda weighted down by all these fancy cars on the road? Fancy bikes? Fancy strollers? I saw a stroller the other day that was like the friggin’ Hummer of strollers. It had knobby wheels and was powered coated. Who’s buying this stuff? It’s not a matter of how much of it there is, it’s a matter of how much money it all costs. In our culture of immediate gratification, the people who provide a little romance should be considered in  highly respected offices…   We built a big boat for the Shcma Schmemer Isle festival. It’s Saturday, July 24th. In 2 days. Our boat is a stage. With lights and a public address system.   YOU can get a boat.   YOU can come to this show.   YOU can have an adventure.   YOU can tell beautiful women you want to drink their bath water.   You can. You can play the ukelele under the full moon. In your boat. Sing songs about rainbows. I do it all the time. Seeing the moon rise over the water, the reflection shimmering in the wake of the beer that Doyle spilled… ah. You can do it. You can wear a dumb outfit, get a boat, come to the show and sleep out under the open sky and change your problem structure. Make getting water your problem. Make the current your problem. Wind. Beer. Make having fun your problem.   You can get a boat on craigslist. For free. You get a few of your friends to come up with a plan that will never work. Do it anyway. Get a boat. Get a truck from that guy you know who has a truck. Bring it to the water. Paddle away. Or motor away. Or whatever. 30 seconds after leaving the dock, all your problems change. You are now on an adventure. Your problem is now all about romance.   You see, the problems you have now are mostly shitty problems dealing with logistics. Computers and cars and jobs and money and your stuff. You deserve more interesting problems. You may want to have boat problems. Boat problems are awesome. It’s hard to describe, really. You may just have to trust me.   Rise to the occasion. 10 minutes ago, you were doing something else on the weekend of the 24th. Now, your going to get a boat… and you are going to Schma Schmemer Isle. You are going on an adventure. You have no idea how, but you are going to do it. It's all about commitment... you commit. Then things happen. You would need a boat to get there. There is no road, no parking lot, no place to camp or pitch your tent. It's on water. Unless you wanna be wet, you'll need a boat. You get a boat, you go to this geographic location and I gaurentee that you will have an adventure. On Saturday night, we are putting on a show. Jason Webly is our main attraction, Then Ben Burke and Caryl are going to do an underwater shadow puppet show, first time ever. Other musicans are gonna do some stuff... pretty loose. It's going to be awesome. The boat we have been building is like a stage. There are a gaggle of people who have rented a dozen house boats. There are more boats comming, and it's probably as close to Anarchy as anyone is ever gonna get. There is no real organizer, no real sponsor and there is no sceduale. There is a map point. Everything else is what we bring. You simply have to eat somewhere tonight. Your going to eat something. Somewhere. Your likely then going to do something. Somehow. This is all true. Your probably just getting hungry about now. And if you weren't, you are now. In 4 or 5 hours you could be here, surrounded by weirdos and eating pasta with seafood, chate du compote, a salad and whatever was left over after the underground farmers market pot luck that was here last night. You could be here, eating and then watching 4 men on an odd shaped stage tell their truths in 4 mediums. And that's exactly what you should do. The boat is nearly done. We are nearly broke. The kickstarter thing is gonna be great, but we need $$ now!!! Or we won't even finish. I'm not kidding. This project was a little ambitious, sure. But they always are. The difference is that this time we're not building a temperary thing. What we build now we will enjoy for 20 years. Everythying done the right way. Every detail taken into account. No more kindergarden carpentry with sheet rock screws and bullshit wood scrapped from some shack somewhere. This is going to be a functional art studio, venue and gallery. And who knows what else. There is an entire wide open field of the arts that has never been more then just peeked at. It's kinda astounding. There is very little crossover from arts to boats. Most of the boat stuff is really sterile. Rich male energy. Super rich. For those of you who can not come tonight, please consider meeting the vessel in the Delta this weekend. You'll need a boat. So we are building a boat and we need to have a little fundraiser because it's fucking expensive and it's kicking our asses. We booked a dinner at the Chez Poulet on Wedensday the 21st, some people are flying in for Ephemerisle and it would be nice to have a meet and greet for them. We decided to do the Ask Dr. Hal Show for the entertainment part. We're good at it, and it's been ages. We will start up again doing the show regular at some point, but for now this is what we have. Dinner and the show together is $35. Just the show is whatever generous donation you can give. Mable is cooking. $$ goes to the boat thing. We need it! Really!!! We really need help. Dinner starts at 8:00 and the show starts at 9:00. I"m now going to spout a bit, just to amuze you. But I didn't wanna put the dinner and the show thing at the end of a long rambling email that only 50 of you will ever read. So.... So I sold the Odeon 5 years and 3 months ago under the full moon in the month of May.  I sold the bar, and went on a trip around the world, as I had never left the country before. The world is quite large, actually. But that's another story. I spent the last of the Odeon money running for Mayor. The rest got frittered away on all 4 failed attempts to start an arts organization/social club. But that's another story. This story is the story of the Hong Kong Shaft. Which sounds like something oddly erotic. But it's not. It's a ghetto way of moving a boat through the water. In Thailand, I saw these Thai boats with longtail motors. You yank an engine out of a car and you turn the drive shaft into a prop shaft. It's the ultimate in weasel tech. Makes SRL look like Playskool. Or Tampax. Boating is so... disconnected. It's all so hidden and so... expensive. Exclusive. Or something. I saw these boats and saw an opportunity that I wouldn't define for 2 years. But when the opportunity arose, I implemented building a longtail with a Hong Kong Shaft and did it on the cheap and we were all hooked. The problem with boats is efficiency. If you didn't know, a boat gets like 3 GALLONS per mile. But with this design, if you go diesel, you can easily get 2 MPG. That's a huge difference. We went about building with garbage, of course, and then even running some of them on gasifiers. Which was a disaster that only Jim Mason could have designed... but that's another story. We built stunning boats out of trash. We made contraptions that challenged the idea of boating, and with the destination of a functional venue that was also a nautical vessel it was an opportunity for fun and activism. No one had ever heard of an art boat. We dragged the idea around the planet a bit, and inspired a new wave of punk rock disasterism. But that's another story. I just wanna tell you why I like boats. Boats are real. They are an immersion in the real. It's all actual. Driving in a car is like all comfy and climate controlled. But a boat is different. You are constantly faced with physics, nature, geometry and everything else. Boats are windows to the biggest problem of our time: disperfection. Being on the water is being alive. There is no numbing, there is no boredom. You are constantly gonna die. You teter on the edge of oblivion and you like it. Your existence is that of a mosquito on the rump of a beast or less in this world, although we think ourselves mighty and full of grace and importance... the open sea can just flick you away like a gnat. But it's also soothing. Being on a boat is like therapy. Resolve. You get an understanding that is hard to describe. And you get that being on any boat. But... but but but... but if you build your own boat... this is even better. All of it. I would write about it more if I understo od it better. But my intention is to just build this boat and be able to share this experience with other people. That is the destination of this boat. To create a venue of sorts. A vessel for a totally unexplored art realm. We're kinda excited about it. There is more here than any other place I've ever been. And I totally wouldn't have gotten that had I not seen the Thai boats with the Hong Kong Shaft. That kind of accessibility. That kind of direct connection to the machine. That abruptness. I can still remember sitting on that water taxi and just being mystified by an inline 6 Isuzu engine putting along. Form and function. We put so much effort into shutting ourselves out of the connection to machines. Tucking everything away, and leaving only sleek lines with plastic covers on everything. I wanna know how everything works. I wanna build my own rollercoaster. I wanna chop down a tree and make it into a guitar and write an albums worth of songs about people who have cleft chins. But that's a whole other story... People have been saying that I've been tight lipped in the last little while. I spent the winter writing a book about failure that I have failed to publish. I poured thought and conviction into that, and there isn't much left to go on and on about over here. But things are good. The boat is nearly done. The event on the water is Saturday, the 24th. Full moon. Friday we'll be in Lock, at a bar. Saturday we'll be on the water and have an epic show booked.  And of course, we have a fundraising dinner and show on Wednesday with a preview of the upcoming run of the Ask Dr. Hal Show. Which is gonna be super fun. Camp Tipsy was a super sucsess this year, with 350 -400 people and 30 entries in the shitty boat contest. The lovely and talented Kelly who came from Pasadina took photos. I don't really know how much I collected or how much it cost or whatever, but before the event I could buy cigars and now I can't. That was scheduled for July 24th. Last year, I was their Technical Director. I built them 3,000 square feet of floating islands that they threw a pretty good party on. It was amuzing. They are are Libertarians, or something close. They would like to start their own country, do the thing that eluded Larry and write their own constitution. They wanna print their own money and get a seat at the UN and not pay their dues like 76% of the country's participating... but lets not be petty about UN dues... Who can blame them? I wanna start my own country. And my own radio station. And my own fashion line. And my own language, with clicks and whirrs and farts and snorts. I wanna start my own country, and make a passport and have cool stamps and assign governors and dukes and use Sortition as the way to assign powerful positions. I wanna be on a stamp!!!! I wanna get a diplomat plate so I can park wherever I want in NYC. I want the butler to announce my entrance "Ladies and gentlemen, it is our esteemed honor to present the monarch of Freedonia, his royal majesty Chicken John!" OK, so none of that is going to happen. Except the radio station, have I told you about the radio station? Ei yi yi... But Ephemerisle was like practice. It was an event, but really it was supposed to be a taste of what rugged individualism was all about. Thrown by free thinking liberty first constitutionalists that make your standard Berkeley liberal look like Dick Cheney. It was a good time last year. I signed up this year to do a floating stage. Booked Jason Webly, a pirate band, a puppet show, Mirium on the trapeze... a small group of people came together to do this project, and it all came together. We bought a 1945 home made house boat, opened a kickstarter account and started hammering... We did pretty good. <a href="http://tinyurl.com/2b3klkl">http://tinyurl.com/2b3klkl</a> The Kickstarter thing is like half funded. Our original budget was $7,500. (ha.) But then a weird thing happened. The Sea Steading Institute cancelled the event. Because they couldn't get insurance. In the first conversation I had with them I told them that insuring this would be impossible. Who listens to me. I guess they have houses and stuff, and if someone gets hurt they could sue. The only people who went last year were other Libertarians. Well. I tried to push and push, but the door slammed, they refunded everyone's ticket price and they are talking about net year. Which they won't be able to insure either. I don't be-grudge them any... but when ya start your own country, ya know I don't know if you can get insurance on that... nation founding insurance... what would the deductable be? They are quick to point out that the insurance problem is one of the many problems that our disingenuous society has created. We are just going to do the event anyway. Pass the hat. Whatever. So here's the deal-e-o... The event now know as Schma-schmem-erilse will be held in the Delta, July 24th. You would need a boat to participate, or some sort of floating something or other. You would sleep on your boat, and all that. You can rent a boat from a few places. There are even places that rent houseboats. Luxurious. But this event is on the water. So you'd need a boat. Paradise Point rents patio boats for like $120 or so. You could sleep a few people on one of those. Grab a canoe and come on out! We'll raft up and do a show. Probably do a show every night. We'll be out there from the 22nd on. We'll be near Bethel Island. We'll send coordinates closer to the event. Our boat is pretty amazing. It was having a problem sinking but it's fine now. We pulled it out of the water and gave it total work over. It was built stout... super stout. We're putting the finishing touches on the engine now. Like the ones we did on the Hudson and the Adriatic. This time we're using a Mercedez 330 D. It's a turbo! It's all so expensive. We're doing a donation dinner on the 21st of July. Tons of people are comming in from out of town to go to the event, so it's kinda a meet and greet and dinner thing. More details soon, just a save the date thing. We could use some encouragement. Think of it as like baiting someone to do something stupid. Goading or whatever. Donations encourage us to continue to do stupid shit. Youâll wanna come out on the boat sometime. I'm trolling for interest if anyone wants to leave Friday night and return Sunday night, to drive the bus towing the Dog Heads, for camping in Point Arena this weekend & watching the fireworks. Point Arena has a parade on Sunday, for July 4th, that the Dog Heads are schedule to be in. They have a big fireworks display over the water. It's going to be awesome. Please email me if you're interested, and if enough people write back we'll make a bus trip of it. Otherwise I'm just going to take the Dog Heads in my truck. I finally figgered out (thanks Dav!) how to post on Wordpress again. We build tons of stuff this weekend. Some of it might even float. We are leaving today to go set up the event. There is much to do. I'm copying the directions here so you have it on your phone: Directions are simple, as there is only one way thereâ¦ Take I 5 to the town of Maxwell. Itâs about 15 miles north of Williams. About 50 miles north of Sacramento. Itâs 95 miles north of SF. Take the only road in Maxwell west, towards the Pacific Ocean. The road will âTâ, to your left will be a dead end dirt road. Take the right. Go over the windy mountain road. You will come to the âtownâ of Ladoga. There is a little store there and a gas station. Ice. Beer. Tampons. 200 feet past this miracle of modern convinience, you will find a giant sign that says Welcome To East Park Reserviour, but they spell it right. At this point you will see your first Camp Tipsy sign. It will have an arrow on it. There are hand made signs guiding you through the park. From the turn off to the park, your like 2 miles away. My phone will work for texts, the number is 415-215-1632. For important things. Camp Tipsy is a donation event. A 'suggested' donation is $100. If that's too little, then give more. If it's too much give less. It costs thousands of dollars to throw Camp Tipsy. And many, many hours and days. Weeks. Whatever. Do whatever feels right. I'm out. See you there. Summertime!!!! chicken

We're here building. It's bizzare. Innertubes are all the rage this year, and the 10 gallon chutney barrels are being lashed to scraps of plywood as we speak. There is a lot to do. So much, that we are gonna do it again tomorrow. We were going to pack up tonight, but there is no way that's gonna happen. All fine with us, it's a nice cool day here in Oakland. We just re-built the swing set boat and are looking at trying to make a rope bridge... So we'll be at NIMBY tomorrow, from say 10 onwards if you'd like to help out or find building nonsence out of bullshit amuzing... chicken

They got towed to a mechanic’s shop, and were told they needed a special part that was not for sale at Kragen. The owner of the shop said he knew a man who collected hard to find parts like this for that exact motor, which was also the motor used to move Dodge Darts through our cruel world. So the 2 of them decided to go to Mission Street and busk (that is, to play music for tips) and stop in and see this Chicken John guy who collects power steering mounting brackets.  <o:p></o:p> Zac and Sheryl came to the bar each with either a tuba or an accordian strapped to them. It was a Tuesday. They said “Hi. We’re from Seattle…” I told them they could play that night, that there was a bartender named Flash that had a pretty good built in crowd. I’d give them $50 out of the till and I’d do a hat pass for them.  <o:p></o:p> They started to talk again…. “Oh.” I said. “You need a place to stay?” I told them where my house was and gave them a key. Don’t let the dog out… all that stuff. I then shooed them out of the bar and told them I’d see them later. Which I did.  <o:p></o:p> They played their set and were delightful. Ya gotta love a tuba. The guys sings and plays the tuba. It’s really grand. After the show, they wanted to talk to me about something, but I was too drunk. They ended up carrying me home, and the next morning they sat me down to ask me something. I instantly responded that they could play again that night opening for the Ask Dr. Hal Show. That’s when the guy did a weird thing. I reached over and placed his hand over my mouth. Firmly. And asked me if I had a power steering mounting bracket for an A-body 225 cubic inch engine.  <o:p></o:p> Sometimes I’m not a good listener.  <o:p></o:p> Sure, they needed a gig and a place to crash. But they needed the part to make the Clark run. I set them up with whatever they needed and sent them on their way. They’d send stuff in the mail from time to time. One of the things they sent was a wedding invitation. Then, a birth announcement. Then another. Their children are now 4 and 5.  <o:p></o:p> The Clark sits in their backyard, now, in Arkansas. They still play music from time to time, but havn’t toured since that summer 7 years ago. They are currently traveling across this nation we were blessed to be born in on the Amtrack. I booked them for a radio show on Radio Valencia, but the fucking website isn’t done yet. So I moved the show over to Ritual. They are going to play at 9:00.
