Thursday, May 17th, the Chez Poulet is proud to screen Dust and Illusion, frechies Burning Man movie starring John Law and that other guy. And me. And you, probably.

Now that none of you can go to Burning Man because tickets are only given to people who are cooler then you, lets skip down memory lane to a time when Burning Man was OURS. Lets remember that BM never 'tipped'. It never experienced "unrestricted growth". It was understand, years ago.

Now, it's complex. Because we are the people of the underdog. And BM is now the man. Read this:

http://blog.burningman.com/2012/05/tenprinciples/how-not-to-burn-commodifying-burning-man/

A company threw an event at BM. Made a mess. Broke the 'rules'. Didn't "Get it". But read that. And tell me that you kinda are torn as to why it's funny. Because the Champaine company are clueless twits, or because the Kool Aide drinkers think their precious event is a flawless jewel that shines with no light...

Me, I can't help but thinking that the Champaine company paid their money and the profit Larry and his band of theiving hucksters made off the tickets they bought was more then enough to cover a pick up truck's worth of garbage. Times 500. Lets say they bought 100 tickets. That's $40K or so. Some fees, some toilets, some art... there is still a shit ton of money left over. A 40 yard dumpster costs like $600 out there. The mess they left might have been a yard. Maybe. $20 bucks in garbage. Cry me a river.

Like no one leaves garbage. Like the event site isn't messy. Like we don't consume products. Like we don't use BM to promote our own schtick. Our own clothing lines. Our art brands. Our cult of personalitys. Our twitter feeds. Our blogs. Our bands. Our careers as scultpers for other events. And on and on and on. Like BM doesn't profit millions a year. Like they aren't selling the event RIGHT NOW to a non-profit they are setting up to continue to bilk us for cash while they go away (which will NEVER happen).

It's complicated. And the only person talking about this fascinating topic is Steve Jones, the guy from the Gaurdian. And he's a raver. Ya can't trust ravers. All that glitter...

Anyway it's a super fascingating topic. Come see the movie. it's also the second to last time you will have to see the cover art from the Book of the Is before it goes away.

It's $10. Doors at 8, film at 9. 3359 Cesar Chavez @ Mission

If you've read my book, The Book of the Is, you know who Chris Karney is. He's a disaster. Amuzing, but disaster. He does a great show. Why isn't he more famous? What has he been doing since he got his start at the Odeon Bar? I have no idea. He's unreliable and he's really self-centered. Duh, all comedians are. So he didn't last too long in my world. I have lost touch with him, mostly. But some of the shows that he did at the Odeon were historic. Some were historicly bad, but these are stories for another time.

While we were all investing in our SF bubble world, Chris went on the road and did comedy clubs. It has probably hardened him. He’s probably tougher and smarter. He’s not young anymore, but he’s still spritely. And I’ll bet he’s still the best card-sharp around.

He’s put together a good show, and it’s probably something of a test the water kind of thing that the club gave him a Thursday night. You should go, pass it on to your pals.

When’s the last time you went to a comedy club, anyway? It’s a whole different world…

This from the chapter on Chris from the book:

BURGER

On a Sunday night, after a Chris Karney Show, I offered to go have a bite to eat with Chris. He was inebriated. He’s one of those guys who doesn’t get sloppy drunk. It would be hard to tell he had 5 shots of Jameson’s and 10 beers. He meter is perfect, no shaking or swaying. It’s an Iowa thing, I think. Ya have to be able to work all those farm implements in 10 degree weather, drunk. He would have to drive home, and he was just polluted with alcohol. “Lets go to Whiz Burger!” I suggest. He obliges, rambling on and on about a new act he wants to do with a bear trap where he has to end up gnawing his own arm off … ALL his acts were disasters. He started off in life as a BMX guy, and could do bike tricks on the bar. He was a 7 ball juggler. He could talk. Cardsharp. He did a three-shell flim-flam like nobody’s business. But he was a disaster. Like a flood or tornado, he’d leave your day in ruins. He had an act where he’d put a condom on a mi
crophone, have an audience member ducktape the mic to his face so he could be ‘hands-free.’ He’d then ducktape his cocktail to the other side of his face so he could drink by tilting his head. All while he was bunny hopping on his bike (like a pogo stick). He would then juggle clubs and sing AC/DC. It would take an hour after the show with peanut butter to get the tape out of his hair. We went to Whiz Burger. The guy there was Iranian or something. Chris was going to make him suffer. They have three burgers there: the burger, which is a single patty, the Burger Burger, which is a double, and the Burger Burger Burger. It’s a triple. I ordered a burger, fries, and a coke. Chris ordered 5 Burger Burgers, 8 Burger Burger Burgers, 4 Burgers, 5 fries, 2 onion rings, 3 Cokes, 2 Sprites, 1 milkshake and a water. Time to watch the show… the guy was struggling with English. If you have ever heard a native Persian speaker try to say things like “area rug,” you know what I mean. Mr. Whiz repeats the order in his strained accent: “You want 5 Burgers, 8 Burger Burger Burger and how many Burger Burger?” Chris shoots back “No no no! Now listen: I want 3 Burgers, 8 Burger Burgers and 6 Burger Burger Burgers. I want 8 French fries, 4 onion rings, 9 Cokes, 2 Sprites and a water.” The guy stares at him for a second before he continues. “8 Burger Burger?” “Burger Burger Burger!!!” “Oh, Burger Burger Burger!” It was impossible. For a second, just one second… the two of them were speaking a brand new language. Burger. The only word in this language was Burger. One of them said “Burger Burger?” and the other replied “Burger Burger Burger!” Then, “ Burger Burger Burger, Burger.” To which Chris responded: “Burger.” I peed my pants.

Maybe last year you loved Burning Man. Maybe. When you could go. Maybe this year you detest Burning Man. Maybe you could care less either way. It's still a great movie. Its a documentary made by an authentic French guy with a silly accent and everything. He was inspired to make a film about Burning Man. As he made the film and got to know that people that run the event he started to lose enthousiasm for the event. At times he eclipsed my disgust for Larry and Marions' money machine and their control issues that makes Game of Thrones look like well adjusted people.

But I digress...

The point is he made a great movie. The other point is that I'm in the movie, and that alone makes it a great movie.

This is also likely the last time it will screen in the Bay Area, or anywhere else for that matter. You see, it isn't welcome in any Burning Man film festival and such because it's not a fluff piece commercial for Burning Man. The guy who made it didn't make it to climb the ladder to the elite Glitterati so he could be 'important' like those other important people. (there are no important people around BM, just a bunch of aging phony baloney hypocritical social climbing duds)

Burning Man is a fascinating topic. Fuck you, it's a fascinating topic. Infuriating, quizzical, confounding, awe-inspriring and humbling. And that's just the ticket buying. To many of us, it's a huge part of our history. Even though we've been mostly written out of it by small minded bean counting blow hards. We did it. We build a city out of scraps from the real city, lived in it however we wanted to, partied in it until we broke it,lit it on fire, danced and fucked on top of the rubble then swept it up and were gone. Without leaving so much as a trace...

That was totally romantic. Now there are 8 art cars for sale at NIMBY (that havn't paid their rent in 4 months). That's not as romantic. That rich people now pay guys to build art cars for them isn't as romantic ($100,000!!!!!). You have to fill out more forms with BM then you do with the IRS. The gate staff are doing the Standford Prison Experiment, the Rangers are like security garuds from a mall, the greeters use the word "super" every other sentence. But we still go, despite the organizations best efforts we still have a grand time. Like we ever go anywhere and don't have a grand time.

Anyway. The romance for most of us has elapsed. But it's still a fascingating topic. If you have not seen this movie, you should. There are trailers, if you like that sort of thing:

http://dustandillusions.com/trailers

the 3rd one is the best...

The movie is narrated by Tom Kennedy, may he be double parked in front of jesus' Prius....

Mark your caleders. Come watch a movie, see the art on display. $10 Chez Poulet, 3359 Cesar Chavez @ Misson 9:00

You should see this movie. Here is a trailer:

http://vimeo.com/10832738 (this one's better)

here is another one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgSRiJjmnYY

It's REAL. It's not some fluffy crap. It's a story. History. It's about culure that you have no idea about. Culture that gone. Ideas that eclipsed. It's a document of time, and its very well done.

this from his Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Daniel_%28filmmaker%29)

"Bill Daniel has received numerous awards including grants from the Film Arts Foundation, Creative Capital, the R&B Feber Charitable Foundation for the Beaux Arts and residencies at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Headlands Center for the Arts and the Center for Land Use Interpretation. His films have been featured at numerous film festivals including the prestigious Viennale or Vienna International Film Festival, The Portland Art Museum's Northwest Film and Video Festival (where his Selective Service System Story was awarded best documentary film), and the True/False Festival, where he has been a panelist. In 2006, Bill Daniel was a judge for the Iowa City International Documentary Film Festival."

Here is the ad I put on Craigslist "women seeking men" to get some more people to come to the show:

Hot, 23 year old Asian female looking for SWM hipster for no strings attached fun. Meet me at the Chez Poulet Thursday night, 3359 Cesar Chavez Street at 8:00 for movie night. I'll be sitting on the round bed with the shag carpet. My name is Olivia.

Don't forget all the super cool artwork is up at the Chez Poulet, the fancy cover art for the Book of the Is. If you havn 't seen it, you totally should. This is the last month to see it...

"Who is Bozo Texino?" is the picaresque chronicle of a 16-year search for the source of a ubiquitous rail graffiti—a simple sketch of a blank-staring character with an infinity-shaped hat and the scrawled moniker, “Bozo Texino”—a drawing seen on railcars for over 80 years. Daniel rode freight trains across the West carrying a Super-8 sound camera and a 16mm Bolex, interviewing tramps and brakemen and in his quest discovered the roots of a folkloric tradition that has gone mostly unnoticed for a century.

Join filmmaker Bill Daniel at Chez Poulet for a bowl of freshly made Mulligan stew, or Beggar stew, (depending on your eating preferences,) and enjoy an intimate screening of his acclaimed film, followed by a Q&A session.
Bill Daniel will also be screening other miscellaneous 16mm films before and after the main feature while DJ McSchmormac of Radio Valencia's "Gramophoney Baloney" show plays some select vintage sounds of weird Americana dating from 1950 and/or earlier.

Some people are confused easily, so I've simplified tonight's event:

Please come by tonight for some food and check out the covers for the Book of the Is, which are installed on the walls.

8:00 3359 Cesar Chavez

If you havn't seen or wish to view again the cover art for the Book of the Is, you will have a few opportunities in the next month and a half, then they are gone forever...

I wrote a book (www.bookoftheis.com), and put out a call to artisits for people to make one off custom covers and 58 people responded to the call. The work is stunning. We had an opening party in September, and showed the work at the MInna Gallery. Every piece sold. Every one. I wanted to take them around to other cities, but it didn't work. So we are showing them at the Chez Poulet from now until the 27th of May. You should come and peek at them. Everyone of them is brilliant...

To says thanks to the artists and to the buyers, I decided to do a weekend of dinners. Last night and tonight. Anyone is welcome.

I made a ton of food, come eat it.

So tonight and tomorrow night I'm having dinners as thank you for people who bought my book or whatever. Whoever. I asked everyone to RSVP, to try to control how many people come. But who knows... I hope it's managable. We may run out of ice cream.

If you don't know, the place is at 3359 Cesar Chavez, @ Mission st... 8:00 is the time.

I'm making goulash. Just like your mother never made.

If your vegan, bring something to eat. Vegetarians can have the string bean and homemade ranch dressing or the beets arugula with Parmesan cheese. And rice. (Bring your own rice)

The art is on the walls, the warehouse is looking good and we installed a keel on the boat the other day. Drilled 17 holes. Only put in 16 bolts.

Oooops.
