Maybe last year you loved Burning Man. Maybe. When you could go. Maybe this year you detest Burning Man. Maybe you could care less either way. It's still a great movie. Its a documentary made by an authentic French guy with a silly accent and everything. He was inspired to make a film about Burning Man. As he made the film and got to know that people that run the event he started to lose enthousiasm for the event. At times he eclipsed my disgust for Larry and Marions' money machine and their control issues that makes Game of Thrones look like well adjusted people.
But I digress...
The point is he made a great movie. The other point is that I'm in the movie, and that alone makes it a great movie.
This is also likely the last time it will screen in the Bay Area, or anywhere else for that matter. You see, it isn't welcome in any Burning Man film festival and such because it's not a fluff piece commercial for Burning Man. The guy who made it didn't make it to climb the ladder to the elite Glitterati so he could be 'important' like those other important people. (there are no important people around BM, just a bunch of aging phony baloney hypocritical social climbing duds)
Burning Man is a fascinating topic. Fuck you, it's a fascinating topic. Infuriating, quizzical, confounding, awe-inspriring and humbling. And that's just the ticket buying. To many of us, it's a huge part of our history. Even though we've been mostly written out of it by small minded bean counting blow hards. We did it. We build a city out of scraps from the real city, lived in it however we wanted to, partied in it until we broke it,lit it on fire, danced and fucked on top of the rubble then swept it up and were gone. Without leaving so much as a trace...
That was totally romantic. Now there are 8 art cars for sale at NIMBY (that havn't paid their rent in 4 months). That's not as romantic. That rich people now pay guys to build art cars for them isn't as romantic ($100,000!!!!!). You have to fill out more forms with BM then you do with the IRS. The gate staff are doing the Standford Prison Experiment, the Rangers are like security garuds from a mall, the greeters use the word "super" every other sentence. But we still go, despite the organizations best efforts we still have a grand time. Like we ever go anywhere and don't have a grand time.
Anyway. The romance for most of us has elapsed. But it's still a fascingating topic. If you have not seen this movie, you should. There are trailers, if you like that sort of thing:

This email lists is that of Showman Chicken John of San Francisco. You can keep up with his shenanigans and shows by being on this list. He also sends out some personal writing and such. He posts a few times a week at most. You sound much more important when you speak about yourself in the 3rd person. At least I do when I talk about me as 'him'.
